The Christmas City in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania is a perfect festive lover’s dream. Once the holiday season has begun, the city transforms with the cobblestone streets, lights, and decorations such as the Star of Bethlehem on the South Mountain. It’s the kind of place where you can’t help feeling a little more cheerful, even with the cold air convincing you otherwise. The city sets itself apart from typical tourist spots by naturally pulling you into its mix of German-inspired markets and holiday traditions. The holiday atmosphere grows stronger with every block as one strolls through this village and throughout the streets, visitors will be allowed to experience the featured unique shops, restaurants and holiday traditions.
This christmas village originated with Moravian settlers naming the town on the Christmas Eve of 1741. The settlers established a religious community and named it “Bethlehem” on Christmas Eve. It’s hard not to imagine the pride they must have felt giving their town such a fitting name on such a memorable night. Additionally, in 1747, the community put up what may have been one of the earliest decorated Christmas trees in America. In the 1800s, the city transitioned from their focus on religion to an industrial tourist destination. By the 1930s, locals began promoting Bethlehem as “Christmas City,” shaping the identity it still carries today. The large mountainside Star of Bethlehem was built in 1935, steel supports were added in 1939, and the Citizens’ Christmas Committee was formed in the 1960s to enhance the holiday experience. Today, much of the city’s holiday season centers on the Christkindlmarkt, the Christmas City Village, historical strolls, and the lighting of the Star.
Holiday shopping in the Christmas City features two major German-inspired markets known as the Christkindlmarkt and the Christmas City Village. Throughout these markets, visitors are able to purchase handmade goods and unique gifts as well as experience the festive decorations lit throughout the village. It’s the kind of shopping where you get to slow down a little, take your time, and maybe discover a gift you didn’t even know you were looking for. The Christkindlmarkt is a large, ticketed event that holds national items, unique gifts, treats, and entertainment. The Christmas City Village is a free, open-air market in the courtyard with local vendors in wooden huts selling homemade items and unique gifts, making it my favorite spot to enjoy a nice stroll with my family and loved ones while experiencing the journey of this Christmas village. Walking through the decorated streets gives visitors a small taste of what a German Christmas market might feel like.
The Christmas City food features two Moravian treats such as thin wafer star cookies, German-inspired Christkindlmarkt fare as well as historic local favorites. Anyone stopping for a bite can expect a mix of buttery sweets, warm market snacks, and dishes that reflect centuries of culture from 1920s recipes. They are certainly one of the most delicious snacks offered in this village.Biting into one of them guarantees an explosion of flavors that flow through you. The Christkindlmarkt Food offers vendors that provide a range of German-style market foods like sausages, pastries, and pretzels during the holiday market event. Many of these treats highlight recipes and flavors that go back to the city’s early Moravian roots.
In short, Bethlehem Pennsylvania, also known as “Christmas City, USA” is an European-inspired destination featuring holiday markets such as the Christkindlmarkt and the Christmas City Village. The city offers things like historic tours, carriage rides, and festive streets, all shaped by long-standing customs and traditions.
