The JP Stevens Band held its holiday concert on Wednesday, December 10, under the direction of Mr. Raymond Henricksen, Ms. Pamela Ferrali, and Mr. John Zazzali. Performed by multiple ensembles, the concert created a lively and festive atmosphere for families and students alike.
The performance got off to an exciting start with the Symphonic Band playing three melodic pieces, such as “A Christmas Fantasia”, arranged by Elliot Del Borgo, “Chanukah Collage”, arranged by Andrew Yosviak, and “A Celtic Christmas”, arranged by James L. Hosay. All the different sections of the ensemble worked harmoniously together to create beautiful music that put the audience in a jubilant mood.
Following the Symphonic Band was the Freshman Band that played the pieces “Snowdrifts”, arranged by Michael Oare, “Winter Wonderland,” arranged by John Warrington, and “Snow Day Celebration”, arranged by Alan Stein. These pieces brought a cheerful spirit to the holiday program.
Looking at the smiles on the faces of the audience, it was evident that they were thoroughly enjoying the concert. The mood was set for the upcoming holiday season. Not only was the audience engaged, but the performers were as well.
Ninth-grader Twishaa Shah, who plays the trombone, describes her first high school concert as a fast-paced, exciting experience, saying, “In middle school we spent months on the same songs, but here everything moves quicker, making it really fun.”
Throughout the festive holiday concert, different small ensembles entertained the audience with joyful, captivating pieces. The ensembles included wind quartets and percussion. Before the Wind Ensemble performed its last five songs, the percussion ensemble energized the audience with “All I Want for Christmas Is You”, adding an upbeat moment to the evening.
“It’s all individual work, and I’m really blessed to be able to work with such talented students, and I love going to work every day just for that,” said Mr. Henricksen, before ending the evening.
Lastly, the wind ensemble finished the performance with five lively pieces: “Joy to the World,” arranged by William Silvester; “Greensleeves”, arranged by Alfred Reed; “Festive Sounds of Hanukkah”, arranged by Bill Holcombe; “Adeste Fidelis”, arranged by William Silvester; and “Sleigh Ride”, by Leroy Anderson. The JPS Band Holiday concert concluded with a powerful and memorable finale, leaving the audience in a festive spirit.
The JP Stevens Band performed at its optimal best and achieved its goal of entertaining and uplifting the crowd in its holiday performance. Students, families, and staff look forward to future concerts from this talented group soon.
