On Monday, November 7, JP Stevens Health Occupation Students of America hosted a Cancer Walk in order to support the American Cancer Society and thousands of Americans who are affected by cancer.

Cancer is extremely prevalent in society today. It also has had a big impact on all types of people, even students at JP. In the past year alone, over one million new cases have been diagnosed, and over half a million people have died from the disease. This is especially why building awareness about cancer, as well as raising money for cancer research and care, are extremely important.

“The walk really allowed me to connect with individuals who are suffering from cancer or know someone who is,” junior Pranathi Bammidi said. “I am really grateful that I was able to do my part to help them through the HOSA Cancer Walk.”

JPS HOSA took the initiative to help out individuals affected by cancer by organizing the SMAC Cancer Walk. Each HOSA member contributed to raising money for the event as they were required to buy a ticket for themselves and sell one ticket to another student. The goal of the walk was for 250 people to be present so that the three sponsoring companies of the fundraiser would match the money that JP students raised by selling tickets. Overall, the club passed its goal with 281 participants, raising around $2500 for the American Cancer Society, which will help change the lives of many people who have unfortunately contracted cancer.

During the event, each participant was required to walk three laps in order to complete the walk. Attendees also had the opportunity to win prizes at various booths with games such as a bean bag toss. There were also several tables where participants could eat snacks and talk with their friends.

“I think the walk was really fun with all of the booths and tables, as well as the food everyone donated,” junior Naisha Guttikonda said. “It was a really good way to spread awareness about cancer and also do something meaningful to help.”

All in all, the HOSA Cancer Walk was a huge success for all parties involved. Participants were able to enjoy time with their friends while also making a huge contribution to the American Cancer Society.
