As students shuffle into their classrooms, the atmosphere of school shifts to one of excitement and dread: Excitement for summer break slowly inching closer, and dread for the final few weeks of school where work doesn’t seem to matter anymore. There’s still so much work to be done, yet students are already clocked out, waiting for their golden tans and cool ocean waves to caress their skin. But what makes students so impatient for school’s end?
The month of June creeps up and AP season is finally over. All of the classwork assigned feels pointless after the final exams have been taken. Why work when summer vacation is loudly calling your name? It’s especially difficult for seniors who have already committed to their colleges; effort decreases and now the year is all about making memories in the final few weeks of high school. As if it weren’t already a pain for teachers, the torment of Senioritis accelerates to its maximum. The scorching heat of the building doesn’t help the demotivation, but it does make everyone hot, miserable, and fatigued. When we asked for summer to come faster, we meant the break, not just the unbearable heat! If only the clock could tick faster into the future of sunny skies and the cool ocean breeze.
Despite the dread that comes with continuing school, there are still various ways to optimize your last few weeks! Everyone knows it’s a pain to study for long hours, especially for numerous subjects. Plan a meet up with your friends to study together—it’s more tolerable to work in a group than to suffer alone. It also makes for a good excuse to get some fresh air and socialization. Next, you could allow yourself an extra minute to style and glam yourself up. Put on those shades and add the last bit of jewelry to tie your outfit together. Who says school can’t be your own personal fashion show? If you look your best, you’ll feel your best! It’ll make you more comfortable and confident. Lastly, take the last few weeks to be active. Join all the clubs you want, and attend all of the fun events which are being promoted in the weekly; don’t be afraid to make your own memories inside and outside of school! As assignments simmer down, it gives a lot more leeway to have fun. Take advantage of the time you have left with your school friends and plan to participate in the events school has to offer.
As you reach the final stretch, it’s important to remember that the school year doesn’t have to be all work and assessments. With the correct planning, it could create your best moments of the year! Take the initiative and make the most out of school. Be the one in control of how your last few school weeks go. Nobody else can decide the memories you make and the fun you have except for yourself. Relax, let go, and breathe. You got this.
