On Friday, April 25, John P. Stevens held their annual elections for Student and Class Council (Classes of 2026, 2027, and 2028). This year, 41 students ran for positions as school and class leaders, but their path for them to such positions was not easy. Each student had to attend a mandatory interest meeting, receive approval from the advisors and school administrators to seek office, submit an application, and present a one minute speech to their entire grade. In addition, the student council candidates were to give a speech to all grades.
On election day, the students made their way to the Old Gym during their social studies classes and voted for student and class council candidates. At J.P. Stevens, it has been a tradition for the students to vote on voting machines similar to community polls to promote lasting future civic engagement.
“I am deeply appreciative of the support from the History department, administration, class council advisors, and senior class volunteers,” said the Student Council advisor, Mrs. Babbin. “I’d never be able to run the election and campaigns without them.”
All prospective candidates held their breaths as Mr. Robinson announced the results at the end of the week. For the class of 2028, the officers are Sujay Budigam as the President, Anish Ravi as the Vice President, Aryamik Dey as the Secretary and Shaurya Patel as the Treasurer. As for the class of 2027, the officers are Riya Lakhilal as the President, Aidan Chow as the Vice President, Vibhat Puchalapalli as the Secretary and Alex George as the Treasurer. Thirdly, for the class of 2026, the officers are Ujali Patel as the President, Ethan Lopes as the Vice President, Jasmine Singh as the Singh and Amrin Mohit as the Treasurer. Ultimately, the officers of the Student Council are Anuja Sharma and Aarush Bolla as the Co-Presidents, Aura Vyas and Naman Arora as the Vice Presidents, Shayaan Nandanraj as the Recording Secretary, Laya Paul as the Corresponding Secretary and Aditya Herekar as the Treasurer.
“I’m so excited that I have been given the opportunity to continue my journey as a student council officer into senior year,” said junior Anuja Sharma. “I’m looking forward to working with my peers to create an inclusive environment in the school where we are able to create fun events and memories while fostering an environment where everyone feels heard and valued.”
