With a final record of 9-14, the Hawk’s hard-fought wrestling season has come to an end. Led by their coach, Mr. Jacob George, along with captains Adolfo Malabanan and Casey Wong, the team has worked strenuously during practices to succeed.
“Everyone challenges each other to achieve higher heights. When we see one another not working or coming to practice, we check on our teammates to make sure they’re in good health,“ remarked senior heavyweight Isaiah Dennis, a pivotal wrestler for the Hawks. The mentality Dennis describes reflects the hard work the Hawks commit to daily, which has fostered high chemistry and outstanding performances.
In a critical meet, the Hawks faced off against Red Bank Regional on the mats, securing a narrow victory of 39-38. The match was hard fought and began with an immediate blow going down 0-6. Answering back, captain Casey made an early pin, tying the score. Soon after, captain Adolfo connected with a pin of his own, giving the Hawks a lead of 12-9. This lead, however, was short lived after consecutive losses, resulting in a score of 38-18. The Hawks could have given up, but they remembered their diligence throughout the season and continued to fight. After two pins and a forfeit, the Hawks closed the gap and were now down five points—they would need a pin to succeed.
With one last match, Isaiah prepared himself, and stepped foot on the mat. Following three long, crucial minutes, Isaiah had done it—he had pinned his opponent. Throughout the highs and lows of the match, the Hawks stayed resilient and never neglected their hard work which ultimately staged their comeback.
As they enter the state tournament, the hard work they have put in illustrates the dedication and perseverance that defines their team. Their comeback victory serves as a symbol for their commitment to their craft, proving that despite the lows of a match, there will always be highs to come. Now, competing at the highest level, the Hawks have all the means to succeed.
