Agastya Dewan, known for his impeccable defense, is one of the best tennis players in Greater Middlesex County. Agastya aka “The Champ” is the current defending champion of the Greater Middlesex County second singles title. Last season, he boasted a winning record, helping the team to a 13-6 record and a third place finish at the county tournament. This year, Agastya is hoping to lead the Hawks to another successful season.
Agastya began playing tennis when he was in fifth grade after he opted to switch from table tennis. He decided to put emphasis on tennis due to its intensity, and has been playing club tennis for the USTA since then. Here at JPS, Agastya has been a member of the Hawks Varsity Tennis Team for both freshman and junior seasons. As a freshman, he played third singles for the Hawks and as second singles during junior year after taking a break during his sophomore year. Last season as a junior, Agastya was honored with selections to both the All-GMC Team and the All-Red Division Team. These prestigious accolades recognize his exceptional performance throughout the season and reflect his countless years of hard work.
Agastya throughout his years playing for JPS takes pride in being a Hawk. Agastya’s primary goal is to leave behind a positive and lasting legacy. Reflecting on his time at JPS, he wants to be “remembered as someone who is hardworking, respectful, achieves his goals, and leaves a positive impact on the school”.
Along with being talented on the court, Agastya is admired by his coaches for his defensive style of play along with his fighting spirit. Both Coach Rosenberg and Coach Mendez feel that Agastya is talented at not only the physical but mental aspect of tennis. “Tennis is a combination of boxing and chess and Agastya excels at both aspects and that was never more evident than last year when he shocked everyone but me by winning the GMC Championship at 2nd singles,” said Coach Rosenberg. Agastya’s teammates along with his coaches admire him as diligent and hardworking.
Sophomore varsity boys tennis player Eshin Nadapara says that “as a player, Agastya is the most tenacious and hard working player on the court.”
Outside of tennis, Agastya has been a member of club swimming at Ricochet for three years, club table tennis for two years, and club basketball for a year. Outside of school, he enjoys watching “Manifest,”working out at the gym, and hanging out with his friends. He loves pasta and his favorite color is black.
Agastya has accomplished countless achievements for JPS. After high school, Agastya wants to attend college, study Fintech, and become a successful businessman. Now that his playing days at JPS are coming to an end, we know that Agastya will be remembered for his fighting spirit and determination by all those who had the honor of watching him play.
