On Thursday, November 14, the annual Veteran’s Day Flag Ceremony took place on the front lawn of JP Stevens, commemorating all living veterans, with a special focus on disabled veterans. The event began with the JP Stevens Band performing the National Anthem followed by a rendition of “Armed Forces on Parade.” The CAP (Civil Air Patrol) color guard then marched into formation, with the American flag in hand, before Mr. Robinson began his speech.
Highlighting the significance of the countless flags planted on the field, Mr. Robinson described how money was raised by student organizations, teachers, staff, and parents alike. For every ten dollars contributed to the DAV (Disabled American Veterans Organization), a flag is sent to the donor. Along with the help of the Social Studies Honor Society (SNHS) and the custodial team, five-hundred flags were placed on the lawn of JP Stevens. Each flag represents a disabled American veteran, or someone that wished to be sponsored.
The money fundraised through this process is utilized for educational programs, vocational schools, housing for veterans, and more. This year, JP was the 11th highest donor in the nation. Mr. Robinson expressed hopes to bring this ranking to the single digits next year.
Throughout the ceremony, veterans affiliated with the school community were recognized for their service. Several history classes and staff members also attended the event, to reflect on the significance of Veteran’s Day. As a veteran himself, Mr. Robinson wants the student body to understand the importance of acknowledging veterans, noting that “Veterans won’t ask for your thanks and support, it’s up to us to give it to them.” He wishes that “People knew the young men that he worked with,” as they were “the best of what the country had to offer.”
At the close of the ceremony, Mr. Robinson expressed his heartfelt gratitude to everyone for the outpouring of support, “Thank[ing] them for the opportunities and sacrifices the [veterans] made.” He concluded with optimism, as he believes the defense of our country is in good hands and looks forward to running this campaign in the years to come.
Ultimately, JP Stevens’ Veterans Day Ceremony allowed for the school’s community to recognize the profound sacrifices of veterans, and recognize and commend our own school’s veterans. The Field of Flags celebrated the strength of disabled veterans all while reminding our generation of the importance of patriotism and unity.
