JPS Fall Cheer can be summed up in one word: teamwork — and Senior Captain Breandan Ray is an integral factor in its collaborative success. He leads the team in working hard to perform various stunts, dances, and cheers throughout the season. Most importantly, Breandan encourages the team to hold each other up, figuratively and literally, ensuring success in JPS Cheer. 

Breandan has been on the JPS Cheer team since his freshman year. Recalling the interest meeting that initially convinced him to join cheer, he emphasizes the immediately welcoming environment the team fostered, despite never having played sports as a child. He describes the atmosphere as “so welcoming that I knew I had to try it out.”

As a freshman, Breandan was a shy and reserved student who didn’t like to raise his voice. However, as a result of cheering in front of a large audience, Breandan has gained confidence over his years on the team, fundamentally changing his demeanor and personality. He describes the experience warmly, commenting on how “cheer has made me feel more confident in myself.” 

Today, as captain, he takes on the responsibility of teaching beginners numerous cheers, dances, and stunts, strengthening a sense of leadership. In terms of advice to newcomers, Breandan suggests they avoid making comparisons to more experienced cheerleaders as it will only negatively affect them. He reassures everyone, “Focus on improving yourself, and everything will be fine!” 

Looking back, Breandan’s favorite aspect of cheer has been bonding with others. Knowing he made the right choice to join after recounting the many close friendships from cheer, it is evident that Breandan is an integral part of the Cheer community. 

Breandan represented the JPS Cheer Team at the GMC Sportsmanship Summit, where he had the opportunity to discuss leadership among cheerleaders from a variety of schools. He describes the event as “an amazing experience.” In the future, he hopes to continue cheer by joining a college cheer team or coaching an All-Star team. 

Looking back at Breandan’s achievements and contributions to the cheer team, it is evident that he plays a crucial role in the success of the team. Due to Breandan’s actions and encouragement, the JPS Cheer Team fosters an open and welcoming environment.
