The JP Stevens boys varsity soccer team nears completion, boasting a winning record of 7-4-1. With a lineup consisting of fourteen seniors, six juniors, and three sophomores, the boys have shown dedication and commitment to their craft.
Reflecting on their season, captain Tanish Chanthan praised the team’s zealous work ethic, “We hold each other accountable and push one another to improve 1% every day, and that’s helped us come together as one unit. It’s not just about individual talent—it’s about how we come together and work hard even when it’s tough. Each player’s commitment to the team on and off the field has really made the difference for us this year.”
In their first game, the Hawks secured a 4-3 victory over Sayreville High School. The Hawks played fiercely, with senior Edwin Thomas scoring a goal in the first half. With two consecutive goals in the second half, the Hawks took the lead, going up 3-2. However, after the boys conceded a goal, they were forced to enter overtime.The boys handled the pressure of overtime, as senior Ishaan Manu would score the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute of the game.
After two strong wins against crosstown rival, Edison High, the boys entered their first game of the GMCs against South Plainfield High School. Brimming with confidence , the boys began the game, swiftly making precise passes for a shot attempt. Nevertheless, the first half resulted in a scoreless draw. Entering the second half, the boys knew they would have to play aggressively. At the 41st-minute mark, sophomore Talha Syed received a cross from Abhishek Narkhede. Talha took a confident shot, a clean strike into the net, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
“After Abhishek crossed the ball, I saw it was nearing me. All I really thought about was hitting it as hard as I could at the goal, and it hit the deep net on the right side,” said Talha, discussing his thought process during his shot.
Although South Plainfield launched several goal attempts, goalie Yash Kadam, determined to prevail, made seven critical saves. His incredible saves, paired with the hard work of the team’s defenders, allowed JP Stevens to secure their first victory in the GMC tournament. The boys have more upcoming matches in the GMC tournament, and their compelling start shows the skill they possess to oppose any approaching challenges.
