Mr. Hrevnak has always been a smiling face amongst faculty and students throughout his time at JP Stevens. He is undoubtedly a driven educator, who pushes his students to realize their full potential. In fact, one of Mr. Hrevnak’s pupils, Mrs. Bongiovanni, teaches at JP! Along with teaching, he is also involved in various committees such as the Health and Safety Committee. His passion for education and impacting change in his community is certainly evident. Recently, Mr. Hrevnak attended his 40th year high school reunion, and states that he “can’t wait to go to the next one,” in 5 years.
Mr. Hrevnak is a dedicated educator who devoted 36 years of his life to teaching mathematics at JP Stevens. He currently teaches AP Calculus AB and Calculus Honors in JP Stevens, a course he greatly enjoys. Mr. Hrevnak has taught every level of math, although the last 25 years have solely been focused on Calculus. As the recently appointed ETEA President, he says he will miss JP’s community the most as he embarks on this new journey. He has undoubtedly left a lasting impression on JP through his efforts as a math teacher.
When asked about one of the most impactful moments in his career at JP, Mr. Hrevnak described an experience in which he was named the US Presidential Scholar “Person of Influence.” This is a very prestigious honor, as only two individuals are chosen from each state. He traveled to Washington D.C, where he was able to meet the Secretary of Education.
Mr. Hrevnak is taking a considerable leave of absence for 3 years due to his position as the new ETEA President. He described his experience as the 1st Vice President for the last 12 years of the Edison Township Education Association. He negotiated six contracts and also does salary guides in his position. As of right now, Mr. Hrevnak’s goal is to “draw younger teachers coming in” to get involved to aid in the transition for future endeavors. He hopes that the coming generation of teachers is able to accomplish just as much as their predecessors did. Throughout his career, Mr. Hrevnak has worked cooperatively with the superintendent and Board of Education, where he was able to foster his passion for education.
When asked to offer one piece of parting advice to students at JP, Mr. Hrevnak says to “Take advantage of the education you are offered.” Edison has consistently been ranked one of the best public schools in the country, and New Jersey is the best state for education. He also tells students that it is important to have fun and build memories, and to enjoy your time at this school. Mr. Hrevnak also pushes students to become involved in extracurricular activities in school. As a student, Mr. Hrevnak wrote for the school newspaper and as an educator, he coached and ran activities such as Key Club. Mr. Hrevnak believes strongly in students advocating for themselves.
As he focuses on his position as ETEA President, Mr. Hrevnak says he’s definitely going to miss his students and colleagues. At the beginning of each year, he tells his students, “We’re part of each other’s lives for the next year.” Mr. Hrevnak always keeps the best interests of everybody involved. Although he is not retiring, Mr. Hrevnak believes this will be a great opportunity for him. He says, “36 years has been a good run,” and looks forward to his new position as ETEA President. We wish Mr. Hrevnak all the best on his new journey!
