Undoubtedly, the worst part about the end of the school year is the heat. Add JP Stevens into the equation, and the feeling of 80 degree weather is multiplied. You can’t be bothered to do math, especially this close to the last day of school. Rather, you’re imagining yourself looking like the smiley face emoji with sunglasses enjoying mouthwatering ice cream with your friends. Instead of focusing on school, you’re more worried about staying cool—in more ways than one.
The long march towards the summer causes your brain to melt like an ice cream cone and you find yourself constantly preoccupied with feelings of angst. Reaching for summer is like reaching towards the horizon; it’s right there but it’s so far away. In true summer fashion, you revamp your wardrobe, replacing your lightweight spring jackets with colorful Hawaiian shirts. You know that it’ll definitely set the vibe of your classes, given how it’s ostentatious-ness is bound to draw compliments. Compliments from your friends make you feel cool about your new summer look. Your coolness factor is increased, both in fashion and in temperature, from your shorts and light t-shirts.
When you get home, you dump your homework on the floor and run to blast the AC. In the winter, you might’ve done your homework on your bed, wrapped up in your blanket burrito, but now you’d do anything to have your bed stay cold. Fingers crossed that both sides of your pillow are cold too when you go to sleep! You also had stocked your freezer with an unhealthy amount of ice cream and ice pops, because who knows how hot it will get? It reminds you of math class and the word problems where people owned 20-something oranges. But that should be the last of your concerns; you need to be prepared for the heat!
Taking a break from your work, you pull out your phone and discuss plans to hang out with your friends. You spitball a few ideas about going to the park or hanging out at the beach, but eventually come to the conclusion that spending time outside would be sweaty. Not fun to say the least! Instead you can go to indoor arcades, the mall—anywhere with AC is 100% okay with you. As you walk through the mall with your friends, the AC cools you down and you feel elevated as you imagine your group from an admiring child’s perspective. You remember that when you were a child, teenagers seemed so cool to you.
As the school year ends, the heat makes you want to hide under a rock like a worm hiding from the sun. You dream of eating ice cream with friends and hanging out in the glorious air conditioning. You’re counting down the days until summer break, stocking up on colorful Hawaiian shirts, and eating lots of ice cream. As this summer approaches, being cool is the key to beating the summer heat!
