Mrs. Quan has left a huge impact on the JP community as she not only taught computer science, but also helped run two clubs: Girls Who Code and Cyberhawks. Mrs. Quan helped students build a passion for computer science and become more comfortable with technology. As for her education, Mrs. Quan completed her Master’s at Ramapo University, completed coursework at both Kean and the Stevens Institute of Technology, and received her bachelor’s degree at New York University.
Mrs. Quan had a very unique story when becoming a teacher here at JP, referring to it as a “God Moment.” She first became a substitute teacher for the previous computer science teacher at JPS but later became the permanent teacher in March of 1997.
Throughout her career at JP Stevens, Mrs. Quan created many lasting memories. One memory she had in particular was in her first year of teaching. “They wanted to talk and discuss anything but computer science, we would talk about world affairs and current news.” Mrs. Quan said.
Mrs. Quan impacted the JP community and many students through her commitment to clubs, as she ran two very successful computer science clubs: Girls Who Code and Cyberhawks.
“Girls Who Code is a great club for girls who want to try out coding, but are intimidated by the boys. Coding has always been male-dominated, and now it is nice to see more girls joining and making a huge impact,” she remarked.
As for Cyberhawks, Mrs. Quan noted that she is happy that the club has grown. The club was previously one sector and is now three. She is also happy to have helped students build their passion for coding through this club as they competed in various coding competitions and All-Stars. Mrs. Quan hopes her students are more open-minded and look at all the options computer science has to offer.
“Because Computer Science is such a large field, you don’t need only to be a coder. You can look into user interfaces or be a designer, there are a lot of things you can do. I would say it’s not all about coding and look at computer science’s different aspects,” she added.
During her retirement, Mrs. Quan wants to solve the world’s mysteries and is also excited to spend more time with her family and relax. She hopes to travel to Hawaii and visit all the National Parks, such as Red Rock Canyon.
We hope Mrs. Quan has a relaxing retirement! Her dedication to the Computer Science program at JP will certainly be cherished, as she made a huge impact on the lives of many students and JP’s community.
