A Chorus Line was JP Stevens Theatre Company’s latest play, involving a group of seventeen dancers aspiring to be the next hit in the dancing chorus of Broadway. Each dancer believed this was their passion and their way of life, as dance was meant for them. The cast consisted of thirty people to fulfill all the roles needed, and an extra thirty-five people were included in backstage operations to keep the musical running smoothly.
Production of A Chorus Line spanned multiple months, requiring a dedicated backstage production team, sound and lyrical creation, choreography of lines, and so much more. The team was successfully able to work out every single issue that may have appeared during the musical.
“Being part of the musical let me work on and off stage, from makeup to performing, and be part of a supportive team,” said freshman Jenna Trotman.
Difficulties occurred during the production of the play as the auditorium went under renovation a month before the musical debuted for the public, a major problem the theatre company had to work around. The issue was quickly solved with a relocation to EHS’s stage instead, but added a setback of one month to the play’s debut. This only gave the actors and backstage operations more time to deal with any issues, allowing them to overcome any additional obstacles along the way.
The product of months of hard work led up to a lively musical, with a turnout of over one hundred people showing up to witness this musical. Operations backstage dealt with all of the grueling tasks, sets were beautifully painted, sound was working smoothly, and the actors were ready to perform.
Senior Casey Decker remarked, “I’m glad I got to have A Chorus Line as my 8th and final show in the theater company, and I will miss the wonderful experiences I’ve had in the program.”
Opening night and the two days following were successes for the musical and the company. The show ran wonderfully, with all issues ironed out pre-debut. The theatre company will be returning next school year in the fall and spring, producing many more hits like this. However, the product of months of hard work led up to one of the most beautiful and lively musicals, with a turnout of over one hundred people showing up to witness this musical.
