The JP Stevens High School (JPS) Jazz Ensemble recently participated in the 2024 State Finals, hosted at Edison High School on April 27 at 5:00 PM. JPS took home a commendable third place, after competing against some of the best ensembles in New Jersey.
Under the direction and guidance of Mr. John Zazzali, JP’s top jazz group performed a varied repertoire, with a diverse selection of pieces including, “Back to Bayview,” a great intro for the Band’s showing by Vince Norman, “Stardust,” a groovy piece composed by Carmichael and Parish, and finally Gordon Goodwin’s “Thad Said No,” a fiery and lively composition to end the ensemble’s performance. Each piece served as a testament to the skill and versatility of the JP Jazz Ensemble.
Reflecting on the event, senior clarinetist Rishi Gurnani, who received an honorable mention, expressed his satisfaction: “This was a satisfying conclusion to our season. It was great to see the top high school jazz ensembles in New Jersey performing together. We’re proud to have been part of it.”
Along with the entire ensemble’s success, other players along with Rishi Gurnani were honored for their excellent solo performances. Senior Samar Munagala also earned Outstanding Soloist on the trumpet. Senior Avi Patel rounded out the trio of distinctions with an honorable mention for his bass playing.
Sophomore trombonist Pranav Vemulapalli conveyed his satisfaction with the group’s performance: “It was rewarding to showcase our hard work to the audience after months of preparation. We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished.”
This season and the success from the state finals for the John P. Stevens Jazz Ensemble has been a tribute to the Band’s affinity and talent for music and each student’s individuality.
