Mean Girls came to JP Stevens for one romantic and intimate night. On February 14, also known as Valentine’s Day, the Got Your Back Initiative club (GYB) hosted its first movie night, displaying Mean Girls (2004) in room 109. Throughout the month of February, all students were encouraged to spend one comfortable evening surrounded by their loved ones to sit down and eat a variety of snacks, whilst watching a popular film. The Got Your Back club is an initiative to make students in JPS more aware of the dangers of allergies and educate people on the effects of anaphylaxis. The fee for the event was $5-6 dollars per person, raising funds to support the club’s future initiatives.
By the beginning of this event, the seats in the dark English classroom were filled with various volunteers, friends, and students. Everyone became situated in a cozy and comfortable environment to watch the film. The club advisor, Miss Hedges, as well as seniors Gnana Varshita Chakka and Zaara Shaik, the executive board members, were attentive to the student’s enjoyment throughout the entirety of this event, making sure that every student was at ease and entertained.
As the immersed students watched Cady, played by Lindsay Lohan, and Regina, played by Rachel McAdams, feud on screen, they were able to go to the back of the room to collect various snacks to eat. The diligent volunteers for this event sat by the food tables to assist anyone who needed help with anything whatsoever. There were many different options for treats such as mini muffins, cookies, candies, as well as Valentine’s Day-themed marshmallows.
“The movie night was pretty good,” sophomore Gia Salerno stated. “This was a very comfortable environment.”
Furthermore, the volunteers at the event demonstrated their skill for tackling surprises by interacting with the audience while they faced a brief technical difficulty with the projector. This intermission was a great time for students to speak and acquaint themselves with each other.
“This event was a way to get together and hang out,” said club advisor Mrs. Hedges. “To have fun and spread some awareness [on allergies]. It’s what this club is about.”
By the end of the function, students walked off into the night delighted by the film, and overall, the movie night turned out to be a success for everyone involved.
