As captain of the boys basketball team, senior Varun Panjeti continues to contribute tremendously to the team’s success. Playing as a shooting guard and point guard, he averaged 7 points per game in his junior year and is on a roll right now, averaging 14 points per game in his senior season. He is a great 3-point and midrange shooter, and his speed and agility allow him to consistently drive to the basket for a layup.
Every great athlete has to start somewhere. For Varun, his basketball journey started in 5th grade when he joined ETYB (Edison Township Youth Basketball). This was the first time he was exposed to basketball. However, it was not until 8th grade that Varun’s genuine devotion to the game manifested. Aspiring to play varsity basketball as soon as he could, it was evident that he would have to get a deeper understanding of the game in addition to improving his talents. This realization was a game-changer and motivated him to work harder to improve himself and his game every day.
“Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire,” said Varun, reflecting on the mindset he adopted after years of playing the sport.
On top of his incredible work ethic, other factors also played into his commendable performance on the court. Aurko Sarkar, a former JP basketball player, increased Varun’s enthusiasm for the sport. Watching Aurko’s commitment to the game and his unwavering focus and determination both within and beyond the gym helped strengthen Varun’s own motivation even further. In addition, his friends’ unfailing support—even from those outside the school—has been crucial to his basketball journey from the start.
Currently, Varun has no definitive plans post-graduation regarding what he will do with his basketball career. Regardless, he can’t see himself losing his love for the game, so playing recreationally for enjoyment is definitely something he is considering.
Overall, Varun comes to show the success one can achieve through discipline, an unwavering work ethic, and determination. He serves as an inspiration for not just aspiring basketball players, but all athletes.
