In the bedroom, ambient lighting envelops the space in a warm glow, providing a sharp contrast to the shadows cast by the closed blinds and shut door. The computer’s screen, slightly elevated on the desk, emits a subtle radiance that further enhances the cozy atmosphere. The bed is adorned with warm, inviting blankets, providing an ideal retreat for relaxation. Although the room may seem like a snug cocoon, due to the combination of such elements fostering a comfortable environment, all larvae––or in this case, all individuals––must eventually emerge from their comfort zone.
Everyone aspires to grow and better themselves as people, but very few truly realize that it is vital to step out of their comfort zone in order to do so. After all, coming out of one’s sanctuary better equips an individual to deal with the real-world stressors; facing adversities head-on can help each individual gain strength.
JP Stevens’ electronics and robotics teacher Mr. Kearney knows this lesson better than anyone. Also the advisor of the Robotics Club, Mr. Kearney is incredibly involved in helping students learn about the intricacies of electronics, engineering, and robotics. With Mr. Kearney’s leadership, our Robotics Team has gone on to rank very highly in national tournaments and has even landed in the top 20 worldwide for the Global Innovation Challenge. Similarly, after befriending a member of the Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation, an organization which attends air shows all around the nation, he became involved in the foundation and is the current vice president of the international organization. A single opportunity introduced Mr. Kearney to a widespread community. It also helped him become a licensed aircraft mechanic and discover his passion for airshows and aircraft repairs.
Mr. Kearney’s experiences reveal that taking the first step and coming out of one’s comfort zone can really pay off, as he learned more about himself and made lifelong connections. Stepping out of comfort zones usually involves trying various experiences and making sure not to shun any opportunities without giving them real thought. It requires the willpower to embrace any new challenges, regardless of how overwhelming or daunting it may seem at first. By doing so, individuals can gain valuable insight about themselves, just like Mr. Kearney, and therefore instead of dismissing opportunities without careful consideration, individuals should approach them with an open mind.
