In the midst of the summer sun, a dedicated group of JP Stevens runners embark on their daily journey, following their traditional route around Grove Avenue. While opting for summer practice might not seem like the most appealing way to spend the season, for the cross country team, it is the very essence of their fighting spirit. It was this route around Grove Avenue coupled with the team’s deep-seated motivation that propelled the JP Stevens girls cross country team to states for the first time in 14 years.
This past summer, the team devoted countless hours to summer workouts, embracing challenges like speed days, weight room sessions, and time trials without hesitation. There was a huge emphasis on a strong attitude and consistency. The daily mile repeats underscored just that: continual improvement only came with hard work. It was this rigorous training regimen that set the stage for their later success throughout the season.
As the fall approached, bringing with it a chilly breeze and the inherent challenges of running, the team faced long days after school, muscle pains, and general exhaustion. They particularly emphasized the importance of mental toughness, pushing themselves beyond their limits. On challenging days, the coaches had to maintain a serious atmosphere to ensure continuous improvement. However, even when things got tough, the team stuck together, only creating a stronger sense of unity.
“While each runner strives to improve their personal performance through not only physical endurance but also mental resilience, there’s a strong sense of unity within the team at the same time,” said senior captain Sanskriti Nayak. “We are all like a family and consistently support each other through everything.”
Kicking off their season at Monroe High School, the team anticipated a demanding yet exciting journey. Guided by Coach Azher, the team participated in a total of 6 races – including various invitationals – before embarking on their Red Division Championships. The boys cross country team advanced to sectionals at Greystone Park, showing resilience throughout. The girls exhibited a formidable performance that helped them reach states for the first time in 14 years. Furthermore, senior captain Grace Best earned a well-deserved spot in the Meet of Champions, an honor reserved for the top runners in the state.
It was only through the grueling, scorching days of summer that the team was able to clinch their top awards. Fueled by this unwavering motivation, the cross-country team continues to stride successfully in their journey.
