The impressive wins of the JP Stevens girls varsity tennis team come as no surprise, given the unwavering dedication displayed by each of the seven team members. Not only have these athletes used this fall season to strengthen their individual skills, but they were also able to forge an unbreakable bond, clearly visible on the court. What makes them so special is their ability to face high-pressure situations throughout their matches. This season, these girls have found ways to solidify their determination to win several of their games.
The captains, senior Nikita Kondhawekar and senior Neha Saraswatula, have been essential in helping their team understand the importance of match plays by playing with their teammates to sharpen their skills.
“They are able to pinpoint helpful moments of weakness and characteristics about their teammates,” said senior Disha Verma.
Both captains recognized the pivotal role of team bonding in a successful season, fostering it through activities like “team eats” and group karaoke sessions on the bus ride home. They make sure to show their unwavering support even when they are physically drained after their games. Their close-knit relationships were shown during Senior Night when each player expressed their appreciation through thoughtful gifts to the seniors.
Coach Ricky Kuczynski is very proud of the bonds that the players have formed—one of his most prominent goals of the season. The team’s commitment to this goal shone through as they poured their hearts into each game. One of their most significant wins was their game against Monroe, with the girls winning 5-0. This dedication culminated in the varsity team earning seeds for the GMCs. After a tense two-day tournament, the girls persevered to secure a remarkable second-place title, with only one match standing between them and first place. The captains and senior player Reeva Khokar went to compete at states, looking forward to their singles matches. Though the players were disappointed in falling short of their expectations, it was their drive that energized their future games. Using the shortcomings to their advantage, they aspire to improve next year and make it known how far they have come.
It’s inspiring to see such an adept team, able to overcome their obstacles with encouragement found from the other members around them. Cheering from the courts from their team members will always replay in the girls’ hearts, succeeding because of the strong support system that they call their team. Over the past years, it’s evident that these girls have found a home with each other and we will continue to see them grow for the future.
