With the year coming to an end, it is important to appreciate the many senior athletes who have left a mark. Averaging 11.3 points since his junior year and 3 assists, 4 rebounds, and 1.4 steals in his senior year, senior Aurko Sarkar helped the JP Stevens boys basketball team reach its full potential.

“What drove me to get better was just a love for the game. I loved working out and the results came with it,” said Aurko Sarkar.

It is evident that Aurko’s hard work paid off as he was named to the GMC All Red Division 2nd team. Apart from his success on the court, he is also a teammate that advocates for everyone’s best interest. He takes the process seriously and he encourages his peers around him to do the same. His mindset and devotion during his time in JP Stevens has allowed him to become the athlete he is today. Aurko was among a handful of students who would come to school every morning at 6 a.m. to put in extra practice. He worked not only for his personal improvement but for the ultimate success for his team—a mindset that Aurko pushed forth in his team.

“A piece of advice I would give to younger kids is to strive to be the best version of themselves and not compare themselves to anyone else,” said Aurko Sarkar. “I would also urge them to not settle for less than their best and not back down from anyone when competing.”

Aurko’s dedication motivates people around him and his work ethic creates an exemplary model for future Hawks. His high school basketball career is considered truly exceptional as it would be very difficult to replace a leader like Aurko. From being a freshman player on the varsity team to a senior with no regrets, his legacy at JP Stevens will not be forgotten.
