The JP Stevens Choir had its annual winter concert on December 15 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., in the auditorium. Friends and family were immersed in the harmonious nature of choral music with songs that differed in language and messages. The choirs that performed were the Chamber, Acapella, Treble, Tenor, and Concert ensembles, each leaving a lasting impression on the audience members.

The concert began with the Concert choir singing “I Believe,” whose lyrics were found carved in the walls of a Nazi concentration camp in Germany. It spreads the message of holding onto hope in times of need and left the audience awestruck. Next, the choir sang a Hebrew song, “Al Shlosha D’Varim,” which beautifully and skillfully incorporated different harmonies which enhanced the significance of the piece.

Following the Concert Choir, the Treble and Tenor Bass choir then performed multiple songs, with the most memorable pieces being “For the Longest Time” by Billy Joel and “White Winter Hymnal,” as they brought up a sense of nostalgia. Afterward, the renowned Chamber choir came and left the audience dazzled. They performed powerful pieces, such as “Until All Of Us Are Free,” and showcased the sophistication and complexity of their voices. The choir ended with the classic “Holly Jolly Christmas” which brought holiday cheer and spirit all around. The Acapella then joined and shocked audiences with a very unexpected and fierce song: “Fire.” This song was a stark contrast to the other songs as it incorporated many aspects of choral music: vocal percussion, nasal singing, body percussion, and calls. The night was brought to a close by the Concert choir with the timeless piece, “Carol of The Bells.”

“I think we all were excited to bring the choir back completely in the swing of things,” said junior Shraddha Rahul. “There was definitely a time crunch in getting all of our pieces prepared in time, but we put on an excellent show, as always.” This event is the first winter choir concert since the pandemic began which brought about an intense feeling of normalcy among the participants.

This was also the first concert at JP for Ms. Regina McElroy who is a very welcomed addition to the choir family. She brought new teaching techniques which enhanced the sound of the choir. Choir President senior Nikhil Mula, and Co-President, junior Casey Decker, also presented Mr. Matthew Lee and Ms. McElroy with a customary exchange of gifts in the spirit of the holidays. Along with the gifts, they both prepared speeches that were well received by everyone and showcased the family aspect of the choir.

“I thought it was amazing; the songs were really good and they moved me a lot,” said junior Vanna Tiasmic. “And, I really could see that Mr. Lee and Ms. McElroy worked so hard. The songs really put it in a holiday spirit, and I can’t wait for the next concert.”

Overall, the concert was a hit with the audience as well as the choir members themselves. They worked hard to perform these songs and the efforts of their dedication shined. The messages of the songs were very impactful and left memorable, lasting impressions on the audience.
